Beginning at 4.30pm Santa’s Reindeer will be arriving at the Hotel Victoria on their whistle stop tour of the UK. They will also be joined by Heart FM who will be giving out reindeer hats and candy canes, plus Newquay Junior School will be singing carols to bring some extra Christmas spirit to the occasion.
At 6.30pm the lantern parade will be setting off from Narrowcliff, the parade will be made up of Newquay’s Town Band, Newquay Pre School, Newquay Trenance Learning Academy, Newquay Junior Learning Academy, St Columb Minor Learning Academy, Bishops School, 3 Dance Company, Tretherras and Treviglas secondary schools and Cornwall College. Plus Santa and his reindeer will join the parade at the Hotel Victoria. The parade will make its way down Cliff Road and East Street where it will stop at the bottom of Marcus Hill for the switching on of Newquay’s beautiful Christmas lights and blessing of the Christmas tree along with the singing of carols. The parade will then continue through Bank Street to Fore Street where there will be a second chance to see the reindeer at Sainsbury’s carpark.
The evening will culminate at 8.45pm with a breath taking fireworks at Newquay Harbour so make sure you don’t miss out.
Alice Beard, Events Coordinator for the Newquay BID said: “We are so pleased at the number of schools that are taking part in the parade. Last year the parade saw 7,000 people come into the town centre for the Festive Festival and this year we are hoping that this number will rise even more.”
Joe Piwecki, Deputy Town Clerk of Newquay Town Council said “Every year it’s so impressive and satisfying to see Newquay come together for the Annual Christmas Lights Switch On. We aim to make each year better than the last and hope the community enjoy watching it as much as we do organising it”
Throughout the evening many shops will be opening their doors until 8.30pm, and many will be celebrating Black Friday so keep an eye out for bargains! Newquay’s shop windows will also be coming to life for the BID’s Festive Shop Window Competition to help bring a little extra Christmas spirit to Newquay Town’s Centre.
On Saturday 28th November Fistral Surf Co Diner will be hosting a Christmas Craft workshop giving people the chance to come and paint their own arts and crafts to keep as decorations or give as Christmas gifts. There is a small charge involved in each gift made but this has been partly subsidised by the Newquay BID.
Throughout the weekend (Friday 27th – Sunday 29th) Newquay’s annual Music and Ale Festival will be taking place on Fore Street Car Park which is boasting some of Newquay and Cornwall’s best bands and delicious ales, plus some crafts stalls to help you kick start your Christmas shopping if you haven’t done so already.
