Fistral reindeer 5Newquay BID’s Festive Festival is making one extraordinary list

‘Bah Humbug’ is not a phrase you will be likely to hear around Newquay this year as the town’s Business Improvement District (BID) continues to work with Newquay Town Council to bedeck the streets with Christmas fun as part of an enlarged Festive Festival.

People can now get all of their Christmas shopping underway early, whilst getting very much into the seasonal spirit, as the second Festive Festival will run from Friday 29th November until Sunday 1st December.  An action-packed weekend will see a whole host of activities, opportunities and initiatives to get residents and visitors of all ages out onto the streets and the beaches, with boundless Christmas cheer.

Last year, thanks to the collaboration between Newquay Town Council and the BID, the traditional Christmas parade increased the town centre footfall to 2,500 during the special late night shopping evening alone.  This year, the BID is encouraging many more retailers and hospitality establishments to prepare their own Christmas and late night shopping elements in advance so they can take advantage of this key footfall opportunity.

The 2013 Festive Festival will kick off on Friday 29th November with highlights including Santa and his real reindeer setting their sleigh co-ordinates for the Hotel Victoria once again.  Santa and his incredible team of four–legged flyers will be waiting to meet all the children of the town and hear how good they’ve been this year and photo opportunities will abound.  Special late night shopping will be happening right across the town with many establishments throwing open their doors until 8:30pm and an exciting new undercover Food & Craft Market will be taking place in Fore Street.

The popular Lantern Parade, (a new addition from the BID in 2011), will see over 100 brilliant creations travelling from Cliff Road to Fore Street, starting at 7pm. The participating children and their families will be aurally escorted through the town by the Indian Queens Town Band.  The finale of the Friday evening will see a Christmas coloured fireworks display across Newquay harbour.

The festive fun will rock on around the Christmas tree on Saturday 30th with the judging of the BID’s shop window display competition, a kids’ trail competition to help Santa find his reindeer across the town centre, free Christmas craft workshops in local business premises, street entertainment and the continuation of the Food & Craft Market in Fore Street.

And Santa will be ready to run a mile – in multiple – on Sunday 1st December with the new Cornwall Hospice Care ‘Santas on the Beach’ event.  Men and women, boys and girls, young and old – everyone is welcome to join ‘Team Santa’ in this unique festive fundraiser for the Children’s Hospice South West.  You can choose to run, jog or walk along the route in the only Santa Fun Run on sand.  Those who sign-up receive a free Santa suit and are treated to a mince pie and hot drink afterwards so they can continue the merry making. Spaces for the run are limited, so advanced registration is recommended.

Newquay BID Manager Eve Wooldridge says, “Christmas is obviously such a special time of year and working alongside Newquay Town Council we have so much more going on right throughout the town with the 2013 Festive Festival. As we had Santa and his reindeers on the beach last year, we thought we’d go the whole hog and get lots of him onto the sand and we’re really pleased that everyone can enjoy the spectacle whilst raising money for Cornwall Hospice Care.

Eve continues, “I know lots of people are very, very excited about seeing his crew of flying friends this year at the Victoria Hotel.  The new Food & Craft Market will bring lots of new present options to the street and we’re delighted to hear that so many retailers and businesses are set to throw their doors wide open well into the evenings, and to run fun festive workshops for children and adults alike.  We’ll have lights, dancing, animals, food, jogging, drinks and fun in abundance so it’s all set to be one very Festive Festival.”

Newquay BID is also producing a Festive events guide from 25th November-2nd January inclusive.
