Set up by Newquay Business Improvement District (BID) to help the high street look Christmassey and generate festive feeling in the town, the competition was judged by a panel made up of local residents and businesses.
Fifteen local retailers took part across the town and competition was fierce this year with the Book Shop in East Street defending its title of 2012 winner. After much deliberation over a festive hot chocolate or two in one of the town’s tea rooms, the judges were pleased to announce Smile Surf Shop the winner for their detailed display, complete with papier-mâché reindeer.
Deciding the runner up was too tough for the team however and thus they announced a joint win to Gallery 44 for all the hard work that had gone into knitting their Christmas figurines and Northshore Surf Shop for their traditional Christmas scene including festive jumpers.
Emilie Calheam, BID Manager said: “We had a record number of entries for this year’s festive window display competition and we want to congratulate every retailer that took part and helped fill the high street with Christmas cheer. The BID hopes that 2014 will see the competition develop further with more entrants and maybe even a map to help guide people to the festive fun.”
“To get you in the festive mood why not take the window trail through Newquay town centre to see if you agree with the judges’ decision. Start at Sunshine in East Street and wander down the street towards Fore Street. Try to make Santa dance and sing in the window of Clarendon Imports, before heading to Bank Street and admiring the work that has gone into the displays at the sweet shop and Discobeads.”
