Newquay sparkled this weekend with a magical array of Christmas events, organised by Newquay Business Improvement District (BID), Newquay Town Council and local organisations, to kick-start the festive season in style.
Friday afternoon saw a huge crowd gather outside the Hotel Victoria for the first of the seasonal smashers – a meet and greet Santa and his reindeer. With a cheery Santa and real reindeer gracing the streets of Newquay, there were many wonder-filled eyes… and that wasn’t even the children!
On Saturday evening the annual lantern parade continued to be a huge success. Particular highlights were a four metre long fairy queen, floating high above the crowds thanks to six very strong Leo’s, and the brilliant Camborne Band and Truro Samba adding hip-swinging grooves to the precession. The perfect finale was a spectacular firework display courtesy of Newquay Town Council, undoubtedly their best ever. Local shop keepers heartily entered into the festive spirit staying open and offering their customers festive cheer with minced pies and mulled wine.
But the fun didn’t stop there, families flocked to the kids’ activities, with full houses at the cinema (with queues from 9.15am), the decoration workshops and the magic and balloon modelling show.
Newquay BID Manager Eve Wooldridge said: “It was great to see such support for these events in Newquay. They are what the BID is all about – working alongside the Town Council to create exciting events for residents and visitors alike. So, huge thanks to all of the people who came along and showed such enthusiasm.”
The festive cheer will continue through the month with the wonderful Christmas shop window displays. These design extravaganzas are currently being judged by an esteemed panel, so stay tuned for the announcement of the winner. And in the meantime, enjoy!
