Fistral Beach, Newquay, Cornwall

Sunday 14th July, 1-4pm

The Newquay Business Improvement District (BID) is appealing to budding cricketers of all ages to pick up their bats and enter their teams into Newquay’s second annual Beach Cricket Tournament. Taking place on Fistral beach on Sunday 14th July, the event will be hosted by the Newquay Business Improvement District (BID) with the help of the Newquay Cricket Club.

Local paper the Newquay Voice is one of a number of businesses that have already entered a team. The Voice has signed up six employees who are raring to step up to the play, so the BID is asking others to answer the challenge. Simon Fernley, Editor of the Voice said: “Of course we were keen to enter a team to the Beach Cricket tournament. It was a great event in 2012 and The Voice jumped at the chance to be involved this year. You can

be sure we’ll be practising our fielding and fast bowls and are excited to see who we’re up against.”

The day will consist of two tournaments; the first being games for local cricket teams and the second being open to public participation. In the group stages, local teams from across Devon & Cornwall will be invited to come and take part in a six aside tournament to battle it out to win a coveted trophy. The tournament will begin at 11am, the games will last approximately 30 mins each and there will be a final deciding match at 5pm.

The second tournament of the day will take place at 2.30pm and is open to businesses, community groups and anyone who fancies swapping their sunbathing mat for a cricket bat, to come and take part in what promises to be a fun alternative to your usual Saturday afternoon’s entertainment.

Following the tournaments, presentations will take place at 6pm at the Beach Bar where there will be an after party and bbq to help players re-fuel. The beach cricket coincides with the ashes too, so keen cricket spectators

Dave Eggins, Chairman of Newquay Cricket Club said “This is a great opportunity to showcase our fantastic club and get local people involved in the sport, so where better to do this than on one of Cornwall’s most popular beaches. We came along to the beach cricket last year and wanted to add some value and help the BID team to grow the event, hence our involvement. This year we have players coming from across Cornwall who will be very keen to show off their batting skills on Fistral beach.”won’t miss out, as the Beach Bar will have it on the big screen.

BID Manager, Eve Wooldridge, said: “We are really excited about running the beach cricket tournament again for 2013. The event was a success last year but we really wanted to build on this and deliver an even bigger and better tournament. We have some excellent contacts in Newquay and it’s great to have them on board this year.

“While Fistral is most widely renowned for being a surfing beach, we are pleased to showcase the versatility of the beach as a site for any sporting activities.  We hope that this event will allow us to continue to promote Newquay’s unique environment and beaches as multipurpose event spaces for all ages to enjoy.”

Eve continues:

“Newquay BID urges local businesses to take part in the tournament, not only as a welcome break for the afternoon but also as a great way to promote your business to the spectators on Fistral Beach. Why not team up with a neighbouring business and represent your area of the town centre? ”
