Surfs up, as the sun goes down!night surf 2016

As the sun retires each day over the weekend of Friday 10th June – Saturday 11th June, leaving the waters of Newquay’s iconic North Fistral Beach glistening, a venturesome group of international wave warriors will be entering the water to ride waves in the darkness of nightfall. One of the only competitive night time surfing events in the world, the Smart Parking Night Surf, supported by Newquay Business Improvement District (BID) starts on the Saturday at 3pm when the first group of surfers will take to the waves for the Open Division. They will continue to battle it out through the barrels during dusk and into the night, finishing at 11.30pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

Newquay’s greatly loved Smart Parking Night Surf promises to attract the best British surfers, many international competitors and a large crowd for an intense and exciting two day UK Pro Surf Tour competition under the glow of flood lights. For eager spectators, the Newquay Night Surf will also be bringing a host of live music and DJ’s to Fistral Beach.
Also set to keep crowds entertained is an awe-inspiring banging closing crescendo, a fabulous firework display that will light up the beach in a spectacular showdown at 10:45pm on Saturday June 11th. This year’s event is set to be larger and more suspense filled than ever before.

The event’s title sponsor this year is Smart Parking. Other sponsors include Newquay Business Improvement District (BID), who are continuing to fund the firework display, also Fistral Beach Bar, St Austell Brewery’s Korev is to be this year’s beer sponsor, and Fistral Beach sponsoring the Under 18 male’s category.
Event organiser and Director of the UK Pro Surf Tour, Dave Reed says, “The Smart Parking Night Surf is an integral part of the annual Newquay event calendar and the UKPSA Pro Surfer’s programme. We thrive on bringing people together through sport and are grateful that so many people understand the role this event plays in the town as well as for the UK surfing industry. As one of the only event of its kind in Europe, it really helps put Newquay on the map which can only be a good thing for both the local economy and tourism.”

Dave continues, “We would ultimately like to give a huge thanks to all the sponsors who have helped make this event the success that it is. Without the essential ongoing funding and support from Newquay Business Improvement District (BID), we wouldn’t be able to put on sensational firework display that everyone looks forward to so much. The BID team have provided continuous support in terms of communication and marketing, as well as creating a PR presence that we wouldn’t have otherwise had.”

Newquay BID Manager, Eve Wooldridge says, “We’re thrilled to provide funding and support for the upcoming Night Surf event. It’s hugely popular and surfing is intrinsic to the culture and identity of our town. This is one of the only night surfing competitions held globally and because of that, it rouses so much interest, from within Cornwall and well beyond. Working closely with the UKPST, the BID is providing firework funding and marketing support, whilst other sponsors are supporting the entertainment and surfing divisions. We can guarantee it will be an amazing event, whether you’re a surfer or not and best of all, it’s free!”

The current Newquay Night Surf champion title is held by Russell Winter, who is Newquay’s / UK’s only surfer to compete on the WSL WCT World Tour. The accolade is, however, not always retained within Cornwall, with other previous winners including Micah Lester from Australia in 2005 and Nick White from New Zealand in 2008. It truly is a local competition of mass proportions and one not to be missed.
