A group of local businesses, led by Newquay Town Team and Newquay Business Improvement District (BID), has teamed up to enhance some of the key footfall areas in the town centre with vibrant floral displays for summer 2013.

The group, which includes Sainsbury’s and Koncept Gym, worked with Newquay in Bloom and Kim Parish from Landscapes of Distinction, using the remainder of the Town Team funding to invest in brightening up key areas and business premises.

Newquay in Bloom welcomed the input to brighten up some of the key areas that have been on their hit list for some time.  Every year they try to improve the visual aspect of the town, removing weeds and litter, approaching businesses and offering to undertake the work for free if they invested in the materials for them.

Together the teams have proactively targeted the space outside the church on East Street as well as the borders next to Aldi and Sainsbury’s, with plans to improve the pavement outside Barracuda. Businesses have been very supportive and both teams would like to thank Sainsbury’s for their generous donation towards the plants and Koncept Gym for their assistance which has made these improvements possible. With the investment from the Newquay Town Team, they will be able to do a complete makeover ahead of the town being judged both regionally and nationally in this year’s Britain in Bloom competition. For the second year running, the town has been selected to represent the South West in the national finals – last year they beat all the competition in the region, winning the coveted St. Bridget Cup.

Eve Wooldridge, Newquay BID Manager said: “The Town Team felt really strongly about helping Newquay in Bloom to get some of these outstanding projects completed and this grant funding has given them the ability to do this. They work tirelessly to keep this town in tip-top condition and it’s great that we have been able to offer our assistance this year. We have worked closely with Kim Parish from Landscapes of Distinction who has been excellent in guiding us with plant choices and options to get the best value for our displays”.

In addition to this activity, the BID has teamed up with Newquay in Bloom and CORMAC to fund the set-up and maintenance of 32 hanging baskets to businesses in the town centre. The baskets will be on display this summer on buildings from Fore Street through to Bank Street, and fulfil the BIDs business objective to improve the street environment of the town centre.

Geoff Brown, Cornwall Councillor says “Seeing these community partnerships is so positive for Newquay and the displays will make a huge visual difference to our high-street. The Town Team grant funding has had a superb impact on Newquay, with over 30 shops getting a makeover and gateways being tidied up, it’s come at a good time in this difficult economic climate”.
