Gallery 44 in Bank Street has been crowned the winner of Newquay’s Christmas shop window display competition. The competition was arranged by Newquay Business Improvement District (BID) to help the town businesses get into the festive spirit in the run up to Christmas. The judging panel was made up of Karen Hoyle (BID Chair), Rob Agar, business owner and illustrator, and Michael Goddard from M-Store Self Storage, Victoria. Gallery 44’s window display, which included a snowman made out of plastic cups and lots of paper decorations handmade by the staff, really impressed all the judges, in terms of effort, creativity and overall visual effect. Rowes Bakery came second – the judges particularly liked the Christmas tree and snowman made from pastry – and Smile Surf Shop came third, with a snowy family of penguins and giant red baubles in the window.

Twenty businesses took part in the competition altogether, and included jewellery shops, bars, cafes, surf shops and amusement arcades. It was a tough competition for the judges, with the businesses going all out to make their premises look festive and Christmassy – displays included a Christmas tree made from Sex Wax stickers (Animal), enormous Christmas presents (Cornwall Air Ambulance), white chocolate snowmen (ChouKette), handmade Christmas bunting (The Pet Centre), flowers made from plastic bottles (55 Yards) a snow machine and a fifteen foot Christmas tree (Walkabout). Other businesses included Little Gem, Concho Lounge, the Cribbar, Fistral Beach Bar, Pooches Pet Store, the Red Lion, Silver Breeze Jewellery, Slots Amusements, Sprout Health Foods, The Brew and Tattoo and Sailors.
BID Chair Karen Hoyle said “it was great to see all the effort, creativity and inspiration evidenced by all the amazing Christmas decorations that the judging team witnessed, from paper snowflakes and snowmen to natural wreaths and hand-wrapped presents. Thanks to all those businesses who entered and congratulations to Gallery 44”.

BID Manager, Carla-Marie Jones, agreed saying “thanks to all the BID businesses who entered the Christmas shop window: it was really good to see Newquay looking so festive and ready for Christmas”. The prize awarded to Gallery 44 was half a day’s photography session with Mike Searle, well-known local professional photographer.
