Newquay BID is urging local businesses to respond to Cornwall Council’s parking consultation.
Proposals in the Town Parking Review include on street pay and display parking in the town, where parking is currently free; such as Cliff Road and East Street. Newquay BID opposes the proposals due to the impact this will have on businesses and trade within town.
Free parking encourages footfall in the town; allowing residents and visitors to use shops and businesses – the removal of free parking is not appropriate and does not support the businesses themselves, nor residents wishing to use the town.
The BID recently organised a meeting with Newquay Chamber of Commerce, and both town and county councillors to discuss the plans. After meeting, it is apparent a substantial business case against pay and display parking will need to be presented to councillors, to fight the plans. Newquay BID will be putting its objections in writing to the parking review, and presenting a case for why this is not suitable for Newquay.
The BID has launched a research survey, to assess the impact this change would have on town trade. The survey asks shoppers, if free parking were to be replaced with pay & display meters, would you continue to shop in the town. Shoppers and visitors to the town are encouraged to take the survey, so the data can be used to highlight the real impact the change could have. At the time of printing the survey results showed 88% said no, they would shop elsewhere – where parking is free, such as out of town shops and supermarkets. The survey can be found HERE.
Newquay BID Chairman, Jonathan Start says of the plans ‘This proposal will have a substantial negative impact on Newquay’s town centre and we are urging all businesses to make their objection known to Cornwall Council as soon as possible’
A parking consultation event is taking place on Friday 25th November, 11am-8pm, at Heron Tennis Centre. Newquay BID will be attending in the morning and would encourage businesses to attend and share their feedback with Cornwall Council.
